My house smells musty, but I cannot see mold. What now?
A musty odor is a reason to investigate moisture, not proof that an entire house needs remediation. Look at leak history, damp areas, condensation, and accessible spaces before choosing tests or cleanup.
What to consider
Note where and when the smell is strongest, whether it follows rain or humid weather, and any plumbing or roof leaks. Those observations help narrow the investigation without assuming the cause.
Mold may be concealed, but an inspection cannot see through every wall or finish. A report should distinguish what was observed from what needs further investigation. Do not open suspected moldy cavities casually; disturbing materials can spread contamination.
An independent assessment can connect the odor to observable conditions and explain whether targeted sampling would answer a useful question. A single air sample cannot rule out every hidden concern.
